“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls” - Pablo Picasso

In recent years, an increasing number of design hotels have seen the light of day. Perhaps because travelers want to be intrigued on their journeys. They want to escape everyday life - and that’s exactly what art and design has the power to do. At least according to Mr. Picasso, who did dedicate his entire life to it.

In Berlin lies a design hotel, which isn’t new, but certainly worth mentioning due to its take on art - or shall we say, its dedication to the art scene. The name is The Weinmeister (simply because its location on Weinmeisterstrasse) and I was excited to spend a night here and explore the true identity of the hotel. Berlin is FULL of hotels, so how does this one contribute to the hospitality scene?

An ode to creativity

First off, The Weinmeister is a fairly small hotel with an intimate atmosphere, especially catering to couples and hip millennials. It’s ideal for a romantic getaway, but what makes it interesting is the quirky interior design that serves as an ode to the eclectic capital of Berlin. It’s an “adults only hotel”, which could lead your thoughts in a certain direction, but it’s quite innocent, really. It simply means that families with children should probably stay somewhere else with more “suitable” facilities. Here, adults are catered for in terms of design and location. “The creative is certainly unique” - this is a motto of The Weinmeister, who have dedicated three signature double rooms to the abstract world of artist René Turrek. In 4 x 38 m2, he has created small worlds of art and given them names: Paint Club, Peppermint Jam, Wacken and Four Music. A fan of contemporary art? Then choose one of these quirky rooms! Just don’t be scared when waking up to a joint-smoking Jimi Hendrix or a Kurt Cobain with Mickey Mouse ears. It’s all part of the fun!

If you’ve been following the blog (or my hotel reviews) for a while, you know I’m a devoted fan of good hotel breakfast. Unfortunately, Weinmeister doesn’t provide breakfast, as they don’t have a restaurant. Guests can buy a small or large breakfast deal from neighboring Café Einstein though, so you don’t have to leave the hotel empty-stomached. If you’re keen on a hearty breakfast, I’d recommend you browse the areas vibrant cafés (there are plenty of them!)
Coffee and cake can be enjoyed in the lobby, which also invited you to chill with a book or a bit of work. And while we’re speaking of the lobby; you’ll be surprised (or amused? I was both!) by the over-sized furniture that kind of makes you feel like Alice in Wonderland. Another artsy anecdote that makes this hotel a special one.

The perfect location

The area (Mitte) is definitely one of the strong assets of the hotel. Nestled on a fairly calm street connected to buzzing city points (Rosenthaler Platz and Alexander Platz are just a stone’s throw away), there’s really no better place to stay in Berlin if you’re looking to have a relaxed, fun weekend in the German capital. Everything’s literally served to you on a golden plate just outside the hotel. I’m thinking of creating a restaurant guide to the area, so stay tuned for that! 🙂
Another asset is the rooftop. It might be small, but it still has the epic views of city’s famous TV Tower! I’t s not open to public, but can be booked for private parties and events. You might consider booking it just for a few hours during your stay, cause as they say…there’s only one way to spend the summer in Berlin; lounging on the decks and rooftops! The Weinmeister version even has a heated jacuzzi. Need I say more?

Art Event April 27th 2019

On April 27th, The Weinmeister, Lucky Gallery and Berlin-based artist Tina Winkhaus, invites art lovers to a special evening with cocktails, art and networking as focal points. Guests are invited to begin the journey on the rooftop of the hotel, where they can enjoy a cocktail or two, crisp tunes from the DJ and of course a beautiful view of Berlin. Afterwards, it’s time to embark on a guided art tour of The Weinmeister, starting in the signature rooms, which are decorated by a carefully selected group of artists. The tour ends in the lobby, where a few surprises await! Have you always wanted to try body painting? Here’s your chance! Body paint artist, Robin Slonina, will show her magic on a male model, while the company VR4 Content presents ways to combine augmented and virtual reality with art. Furthermore, Sherin L’artiste will do live portrait sessions where guests can get a portrait of themselves to take home.

The signature rooms of The Weinmeister (which I wrote about in the text above) will be decorated by the following international artists: Tina Winkhaus from Berlin, Brad Robson from Sydney, Robin Slonina from Las Vegas, RS Artist from Paris, Charlotte Denoel from Poitiers (France) and Catherine Lupis Thomas from Berlin.
