DIY: The perfect home spa experience

A true wellness experience does not need to cost a fortune. Create it at home with a few luxurious remedies and you are good to go! Follow these steps to get started.

Set the mood

It does not really matter if your bathroom is king size or regular - with just a few remedies and a little imagination, you can transform it into a cosy spa area! Set the mood with a handful of candles (the scented ones are perfect for this occasion!) We recommend: Aquiesse scented candle in White Current & Rose.

Try spreading some fresh rose petals and use the left overs for a home-made rose water (skin tonic), which has great astringent properties. How to make your own rose water: pour two cups of boiling water over a handful of rose petals. Cover it until it is cool. Squeeze the liquid from the petals and put the water in the refrigerator until you need it.

Focus on quality

Luxurious products are essential in any spa - also the one you create yourself! But what exactly do you need? The basics include:

  • Body scrub
  • Face scrub (never use the same scrub for body and face!)
  • A face mask (should be adjusted to the needs of your skin)
  • Body lotion

We recommend:

La Mer – The Body Refiner.

Kiehl’s - Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter.

Embryolisse – Hydra Mask.

Sisley – Radiant Glow Express Mask.

You can also make your own body scrub in no time. All you need is:

  • 1 cup of raw oatmeal
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of olive oil

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and apply to dry skin. Step in the shower and rinse it off - your skin will be softer than ever!

Choose the right equipment

The secret of most beauty routines is using quality tools! You have probably noticed how your makeup looks better and lasts longer when you are using good brushes. The same thing goes for skincare.

Start off by using a quality loofah together with your favorite soap. A ‘stiff’ loofah turns a shower gel or soap into a scrub, which immediately removes dead skin cells. A loofah is cheap, natural and most importantly; it reduces the use of soap and scrub by 50%. The Body Shop has some great loofahs including this one.

While a flat, wide brush for applying your face mask might not seem like a must have, it certainly adds a bit of glamour and wellness to your home-spa experience. The brush helps smoothing the mask onto the skin, and you will find them in most Sephora shops.

Try using a wash cloth when removing makeup or a cleansing mask. It is such a simple trick yet it provides you with a true feeling of luxury. Wash it in lukewarm water and apply it to the face to avoid getting water in your eyes. Softly dab your face dry and you are good to go! The lukewarm water will make sure to open the pores of the skin, which is perfect for a following application of products. Put the cloth in the washing machine after use.

A quick trick to turn your bathroom into a steam bath is to simply turn on the running water on the hottest temperature for about 20 minutes. While the steam is building, spray on your favorite aromatic oil (we recommend lavender or rosemary for a de-stressing effect), breathe in and unwind. There is no better way to pamper body and soul!

Both loofahs, brushes and washcloths can be found in department stores like Magasin or Illum (Denmark). Regarding loofahs, go for good, natural ones. They are a bit more expensive than others, but they are better and longer lasting. When buying a washcloth, go for good quality cotton. Egyptian cotton is splendid for this purpose and can last for years.
