Checking in: Laid-back elegance at Hotel Bairro Alto, Lisbon

Some of you might have noticed my great love for both Portugal and boutique hotel through articles like this and this - but it gets better! Back in April, I found my new favorite hotel in Lisbon and I can’t wait to go back! Read my review of Bairro Alto below.

Bohemian chic

It can be a tricky task to find the perfect hotel in terms of location, service and quality whenever you find yourself in a foreign city. Where to start? Well, first of all, break it down to which hotel category you’re interested in (boutique, family, luxury, B&B etc.) and then pay attention to location. Do you want to stay as central as possible? Or maybe a bit outside of the city? I usually end up choosing smaller hotels with great views, and so the historical ‘Bairro Alto’ was already on top of my list! Nestled between the bohemian yet chic neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Chiado, this hotel is the perfect solution if you’re looking for central and comfortable accommodation in the Portuguese capital.

A view of Lisbon’s Bairro Alto neighborhood

The  neighborhood of Bairro Alto offers a unique blend of cultural sights and charming shops, and one can easily spend 3-4 days here to explore the area. Right next to the hotel, one will find the two major theaters of Lisbon and the Chiado Museum, but if you’re more of a foodie, head straight to ‘The Brazilian’, which is one of Lisbon’s most famous pastry shops.

“Lisbon consists of five districts: Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Belém and Bairro Alto”

Being a five star boutique hotel, Bairro Alto offers 55 cosy rooms divided into 6 categories. Most of the rooms overlook the busy streets Praça Luís de Camões, Rua das Flores or Rua do Alecrim, but you might be lucky to get a view of the Tagus river as well. And speaking of views - there’s no way around a rooftop cocktail at the BA Terrace. Nominated the 4th best hotel terrace view in the world, you’ll instantly learn that one drink here is never enough.
I stayed in a Superior room of approximately 25 m2 with a balcony. Prices start from €270.

Feel at home

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the restaurant ‘Flores do Bairro’, where the kitchen serves up Portuguese specialities with French and Asian twists. The surroundings here are quite intimate leaving guests with the impression that they’re dining with friends rather than eating in a hotel restaurant. I quickly learned that this is the epitome of Bairro Alto, it’s what makes the property stand out from the rest; a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere with a dash of elegance. And this is why you instantly feel at home, too.
